Once you have decided on a general area(s) to go on holiday, whether it be the United Kingdom, Europe or further afield, then finding out what there is to do there is the next thing to do. Firstly, if you plan on going on walks or being adventurous in some way then you will want to purchase an OS map of the area you are visiting. Secondly you may want to purchase a book relating to the area. For example there are books produced by Cicerone which can be helpful in coming up with ideas for walks or places to visit in that area. Specialist books are also available for traveling on a budget such as the Rough Guides series.
While many people will not want to prepare exactly what they will do on holiday, it is still good to BE prepared. If you are going to go hiking or climbing up mountains, or even just walking in the country you need to make sure you have the right equipment. Remember to take the following:
- A good map (OS maps are generally the best)
- Charged mobile phone.
- A torch.
- A compass.
- A warm fleece, perhaps even a hat, scarf and gloves.
- Waterproof clothing.
- A few snacks.
- Appropriate footwear (walking boots)
