Top 10 DVD Boxsets for Students

Living on your own often means that you do get a significant amount of free time during the evenings, and its not always possible to go out and enjoy yourself. Here is a listed of TV and Movie DVD box sets worth watching if you find yourself with a bored moment or two!

10.) Back to the Future Trilogy

This classic Sci-Fi comedy starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd is an absolutely cracking set of films, not too serious and easy to follow as well. Even if you are not a fan of science fiction in general, don’t count out Back to the Future. My personal favourite is the western/sci-fi mix of Back to the Future III.

9.) House

Starring Hugh Laurie as a grumpy, sarcastic genius clinician, House is one of the funniest things to come out of America in the last decade. Rather like CSI only in a hospital, only far far better, admittedly that is hugely helped by the presence of the Laurie himself! The first two seasons are probably the best, but the show is a good watch through all the seasons to date.

8.) NCIS

One of the two underrated gems, I have to share! NCIS is a crime drama about a team of special agents working for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS). The story lines are always good, but what makes NCIS stand above the rest is the friendly and relatable characters and the humorous way they interact with each other!

7.) Psych

Even more off the radar than NCIS is the hilarious comedy Psych, similar to Monk its a police comedy, however Psych is much more of an oddball show. The main character is a fake psychic detective, who actually has heightened observational skills, which he uses to help the local police department solve crimes. The show is far more light hearted than your average cop show, but that is what makes it so appealing. The relationship between the two main characters, Shawn and Gus, also makes the show really very funny to watch!

6.) Malcolm in the Middle

You may remember this amazing piece of comedy genius from your childhood. Malcolm in the Middle is the live action version of The Simpsons. In my opinion thought, its better! The comedy capers of Malcolm and his brothers, Francis, Dewey and Reese get up to are hilarious. Unfortunately only the first season is available on DVD, and unfortunately that will require a Region 1 or Region Free dvd player to play it, but its definitely worth it!

5.) Star Trek : The Next Generation / Deep Space Nine / Voyager

If you know me, you knew this was coming! I was skeptical about watching them at first, but once I watched a couple episodes of The Next Generation I was hooked! They are addictive to the extreme. They are definitely worth at least one watch through. Each show is based on a different ship or station. The Next Generation is based on the USS Enterprise, the Federations flagship, the stories in this series are mainly about exploration. Deep Space Nine is based on a space station, called Deep Space Nine, where the captain, Benjamin Sisko, has to deal with multiple threats to the planet they station protects, the worm hole its near and the near by rogue alien race – the Cardassians. Voyager is about a science vessel that got transported 70,000 light years into the Delta quadrant region of space and now has an estimated time span of 75 years of getting themselves back to Earth.

4.) Life & Planet Earth

Some amazing footage of nature at its best in these two documentary series from the BBC. In particular worth getting if you are studying a biological science at university!

3.) Black Books

Starring Dylan Moran and Bill Bailey this is a brilliant piece of comedy defiantly worth picking up a copy, and watching through the series. The series revolves around Bernard Black (Dylan Moran) the proprietor of the book shop (Black Books…) and Manny (Bill Bailey) his assistant, and Fran an old friend of Bernard. An great little series and going quite cheap at the moment too!

2.) Blackadder

British comedy nearing its very best is Blackadder, my particular favourites are Blackadder II and Blackadder goes Forth, but all four series are hilariously funny to watch.

1.) Fawlty Towers

British sitcom starring John Cleese, one of the funniest and most brilliant pieces of British comedy from the last century! Go out and buy a copy and watch it through, you will not be disappointed!

10 Perfect ways to procrastinate this Exam period…

Revision is possibly the most boring thing on the planet, and yet for the best part of 7 years of my life my Christmas and Easter holidays were ruined by revising for GCSEs, then AS/A2 Levels then 3 years of university exams. Here are 10 great ways to procrastinate and relax when you need that much needed break from revision.

  1. Time to take up a hobby, discovering where the nearest park is 0r how quickly you can walk to the shops and back.
  2. Its time you gained your movie education, Ben Hur, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, To Kill a Mocking Bird, 12 Angry Men and the Godfather I and II.
  3. If you haven’t yet watched Star Trek, now is a good time to watch it from the beginning, well from the next generation beginning, with each of the Next Generation series (TNG, DS9, VOY (you’ll be using this acronyms too after your 21 day stint) lasting over 7 days of non stop television you will be completely engrossed in the world of the Federation for well over a month…
  4. Bake some bread… never a bad time to bake bread (except for when drunk, stoned or in a bad mood).. or maybe a cake, cookies, scones? You decide.
  5. That local museum round the corner, or the university museum… its time to visit it.
  6. Online grocery shopping, spend 2 hours attempting to buy groceries online before giving up and going to the shop an taking less than 20 minutes.
  7. Spring cleaning, its time to see what you’ve left under the bed… or even what surprises the previous tenants have left. Alternatively clean out the freezer and discover what all those non descript sandwiches boxes and bags of questionable meat contain.
  8. Invent a game… no idea really your imagination is probably better than mine.
  9. Your bed linen hasn’t ever been washed has it? Probably about time to do that…
  10. Plan your summer travels, a key part of avoiding getting a job during the summer break!

Remember only procrastinate in moderation…

Good luck with your exams!

House Plant Ideas for Student Rooms

So you room is looking a bit dull? What you need is a plant to cheer the place up! You want one you can’t kill too easily I here you say? Well the answer is probably a plant you can neglect and not require to water for a couple weeks to a month.

The best plants for student rooms are cacti and succulents. Many student unions have plant fairs near the beginning of term, it might be worth checking out, but perhaps more reliably is your local garden centre, where the plants have been grown properly. In all cases check the health of the plant before you buy it, in particular the root system. Don’t buy a plant based on how many flowers its got or fruit, these are only temporary features remember!

If you are not into watering much, then any of the many bog standard garden centre cacti are probably up your street, but if you are after something a bit more interesting then try and find a Lithop, they look a lot like stones.. or bottoms, they don’t require a great deal to maintain and have quite pretty flowers.

Alternatively at a succulent such as one of the many forms of Aloe Vera may be a good choice, or even a Christmas Cactus.

If you are up for slightly more of a challenge than a plant you can near enough forget about for most of its life then Fig Trees are fairly easy to grow, though do require a sunny place! Other fruit trees that are reasonably easy to grow indoors are dwarf orange trees known as Calmondin trees and lemon trees also dwarfs. These are not as easy to maintain as the cacti and succulents mentioned above, and will require a bit of knowledge on when to water and what to feed them, especially if you want them to fruit. Note though that the oranges produced by the calmondin are not particuarly palatable on their own.

Other plants that are reasonable to grow and fairly cheap to buy include Peace Lily’s and Bird of Paradise plants. If you have the room for a large plant then a Rubber Plant is ideal and very easy to look after!

Good luck choosing your plants for your student dig! Chose wisely and your house or room will be spruced up no end!
