- Always keep your doors and windows locked when you go outside the house or your hall.
- Lock your door when you go to the shower or are asleep
- If you live on the ground floor make sure your window is shut before going to sleep.
- Keep your laptop, mobile, iPod and other easy to steal valuable items out of site in a draw when not in use.
- Don’t make it obvious you have a fancy iPhone or anything while your out and about, its practically inviting someone to pick pocket or mug you.
- Use a UV pen or use other security or identification tags to mark your equipment if it does get stolen so it can be traced back to you.
- Consider using something like HomeCamera when you go out if you computer has a webcam on it!
- Keep your ID and bank cards on you at all time. Ensure you wallet and cheque book are never in the same place at the same time.
- If you have an expensive telly or monitor with a spare VGA socket then consider getting a security cable to help. Laptop cables are also available.
- If you think you’re being followed then try crossing over the road, go into a shop or a busy area.

- Keep as little money on you as possible, under £40, if not under £20 if you can.
- Don’t keep much money in your current account either, under £1000, if your card gets nicked you don’t want to find your money has been drained!
- Cancel any lost or stolen cards as soon as you can.
- Try not to forget to leave your debit card at the bar after ordering a few drinks!
- If you take a car keep it locked and in a well lit area at night.
- if you take a bike make sure it is locked on campus and all easily removable parts have been taken with you or locked as well. At night keep it in bike storage or inside your house/back garden.
- If you are in fancy dress don’t wear an expensive hat, people have a tendency to steal fancy dress hats while out at nightclubs, and the last thing you want to do is lose your grandfather’s bowler hat or something!
- Ensure you have good comprehensive student insurance that will cover all your belongings if they are lost, stolen or in an accident.
- If you have a wireless router for broadband or have a WiFi enabled computer ensure no one can access it without a security password, you don’t want people accessing your connection or computer without you knowing!
- If your a girl ensure you carry a Rape Alarm in your hand bag, the likely chance is these will be given out free at university Fresher’ Fair or in a Freebie bag at some point!
- Don’t let Facebook remember your password otherwise your flatmates may change some of your details while your out of your room temporarily!
