Bangers and Mash
Another easy student meal is Bangers and Mash, probably one of the cheapest you can cook as well, although this will completely depend on what kind of sausages you intend to buy! Personally I don’t mind buying the cheaper vegetables, tinned food and supermarket own brand for most things, but for meat I like to ensure that I get something of decent quality, and I would recommend that most people do the same. Ingredients
- 2 Big Sausages or 3-4 Small Sausages (or more if you are hungry)
- 1 Potato or 2-3 Small New Potatoes chopped into small pieces.
Optional Ingredients
- Pinch of Pepper
- Pinch of Salt
- Bisto Gravy Mix
- Seasonal Vegetables
- Grated Cheese
- 1 Teaspoon of Mustard
Recipe
- If the sausages are from frozen put them in grill first, as per the instructions on the back of the packet, if not start boiling the potato water and vegetable water and put the sausages in just before the water is fully boiling.
- Once the potatoes and vegetables are in wait 10 minutes, before draining the potatoes, put in a bit of butter, salt, pepper and to make it a bit more tasty add some grated cheese and mustard, some people add a small amount of milk to their mash, some do not it is completely up to you! Then use a masher or fork and mash! (You may want to delay putting some of your vegetables in depending on what you have, some take much less than 10 minutes to cook!)
- Boil up some water in the kettle and put it in a cup with a teaspoon or two of bisto mix if you want some gravy on your dinner.
- Get the sausages out of the oven or grill, and put them on the plate with the mash and vegetables, pour the gravy over the top! Serve and eat!

Don’t forget to boil/steam some broccoli as a side
By the way – BBC Good Food Magazine does a ‘student special’ every Sept. The next issue (coming out in 3 weeks I think, end Aug) promises to have a student food guide.
I like your blog and good to see that other students actually care what they eat! Good luck at uni.
