Sweet & Sour Chicken, Turkey or Pork

Sweet and Sour Chicken, Turkey or Pork is a really simple, quick and cheap recipe for students to do, and it tastes great. Chicken is an expensive meat! You may find pork or turkey to be a cheaper option! As yet I’ve not tried this meal with Turkey, but I’ve been told it tastes good! More easy student recipes can be found located in the Student Coobook.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 Chopped Onion
  • 1 Chicken Breast or Pork, Turkey portion
  • 3-4 Mushrooms
  • 1/2 Red Pepper
  • Clove of Garlic
  • 1 Tablespoon Tomato Puree
  • 1 Tablespoons of Sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon of White Wine Vinegar (Around 50p a Bottle in Tesco)
  • 1/2 Tablespoon of Cornflour

Optional Ingredients

  • Handful of Bean Sprouts
  • 2 or 3 Spring Onions
  • 1/4 of a Yellow and Green Peppers.
  • 1-2 Rings of Chopped up Tinned Pineapple

Recipe

  • Start your rice boiling, at the same time put your chopped onion in to a frying pan with a small amount of oil and fry until soft.
  • Add the chicken, turkey or pork chopped up into bite size pieces into the frying pan and cook until browned
  • To make your sweet and sour sauce, put the tomato puree, sugar, white wine vinegar and cornflour in a sauce pan along with 1/2 a mug of water and stir until it is all the same thickness and colour. Leave it to cool/thicken a bit on the hob until your chicken is cooked.
  • Once the chicken is cooked at the sweet and sour sauce to it along with the bean sprouts, peppers, garlic and mushrooms and leave for around 10 minutes on on a high heat until it boils then on a low heat for the remainder. You may wish to fry your vegetables before putting the sauce on but its not a requirement.
  • Drain the rice and serve with the chicken/pork/turkey on a plate.

This is a much cheaper way of having sweet and sour than buying a premade sauce or having a takeaway!
